Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is used for therapeutic treatment over urinary and respiratory tract infections usually caused by susceptible organisms. It has several functions, as it is able to act as an antiinfective agent, a topoisomerase IV inhibitor, an antibacterial drug, a DNA synthesis inhibitor, an antimicrobial agent, an environmental contaminant, and a xenobiotic. It has been approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration as a prescribed form of medication that can prevent infections caused by certain types of bacteria.
